Felt Heart Ornament with Blanket Stitch
Age: 13+ years · Time: 60 min · Level: Medium–hard
Blanket stitch is a simple, neat stitch that joins two layers of fabric along the edge.
Materials
- 2 pieces of red felt, about 12 × 12 cm (5 × 5 inches)
- white embroidery floss
- embroidery needle with a large eye
- paper and pencil for the pattern
- fabric scissors
- pins and a pincushion
- a little polyester stuffing
- a ribbon, about 15 cm (6 inches), for hanging
Steps
- Fold the paper in half, draw half a heart against the fold and cut it out. Now you have a symmetrical pattern, about 9 cm (3 1/2 inches) wide.
- Pin the pattern onto both pieces of felt and cut out two hearts.
- Thread the needle with about 60 cm (24 inches) of floss and tie a knot at one end.
- Fold the ribbon into a loop and place the ends between the felt hearts, at the top center.
- Bring the needle up between the layers so the knot is hidden. Sew blanket stitch about 4 mm (1/8 inch) from the edge, about 5 mm (1/4 inch) apart: go through both layers and pass the needle through the loop of floss before you pull tight. Sew through the ribbon when you get to it.
- Sew around the heart until about 4 cm (1 1/2 inches) are left. Add a little stuffing and finish sewing.
- Tie a knot to secure the floss and hide the end between the layers.
Safety for grown-ups
Needles and pins are sharp – keep them in the pincushion when you are not sewing and pick them all up when you are done. Keep needles and small parts away from little kids.
