Remembrance Lantern from a Glass Jar
Age: 13+ years · Time: 45 min + drying time · Level: Medium
Around All Saints' Day, many people in Sweden light candles and think of people they miss. Your own lantern can be a calm way to remember someone – or simply to brighten a dark fall evening.
Materials
- 1 clean glass jar with the label removed
- tissue paper in fall colors
- a few pressed leaves (optional)
- craft glue or white school glue mixed with a little water
- wide paintbrush
- yarn or twine
- 1 battery-powered LED candle
- a small paper tag and a pen (optional)
Steps
- Wash the jar, remove the label and dry it well.
- Tear the tissue paper into pieces, about the size of a postage stamp or a little bigger.
- Brush glue onto a small area of the jar, add a piece of tissue paper and brush a little glue on top.
- Keep going until the whole jar is covered. Let the pieces overlap. You can place a pressed leaf under one layer of tissue paper.
- Let the lantern dry for 2–3 hours.
- Wind yarn around the neck of the jar several times and tie a bow.
- If you like, write a name or a happy memory on the tag and tie it to the yarn.
- Place the LED candle in the jar and switch it on.
Safety for grown-ups
Use only battery-powered LED candles – tissue paper and glue can catch fire from a real flame. Handle glass with care and do not use a jar that is chipped or cracked.
