Twig and Yarn Christmas Star
Age: 10–12 years · Time: 45 min · Level: Medium
A star made from natural materials to hang in your window during Advent. Pick up twigs that are already lying on the ground.
Materials
- 5 dry, straight twigs, about 25 cm (10 inches) long
- pruning shears (for an adult)
- red or white yarn
- scissors
- ruler
- wood glue (optional)
Steps
- Collect dry, straight twigs that are lying on the ground. Do not break branches off living trees.
- An adult cuts all five twigs to the same length, about 20 cm (8 inches).
- Lay the twigs out as a five-pointed star on the table, like in the picture. Each twig goes from one point to another point, and no twig joins two points that are next to each other.
- Tie the twigs together at each point: wind the yarn around several times and tie a double knot.
- Tie or glue the twigs where they cross each other, so the star is sturdy.
- Wind yarn around the points to decorate them and make a loop to hang the star.
Safety for grown-ups
Only an adult uses the pruning shears. Check the twigs for splinters and sharp ends. Wash your hands after collecting things outdoors.
