Age: 13+ years · Time: 1.5–2 hours · Level: Challenging
Materials
stiff cardboard, 3 × 8.5 in, yarn in 3–4 autumn colors, blunt plastic needle or tapestry needle with a rounded tip, scissors, ruler and pencil, tape.
Steps
- Mark lines every 5/16 in along the short ends of the cardboard and cut small notches at the marks.
- Wind the warp yarn around the cardboard through the notches and tape the ends on the back.
- Thread the needle with weft yarn and weave over–under across the warp.
- Weave back the other way under–over. Push the rows close together with your fingers.
- Change colors every 1/2 to 3/4 in. Leave loose ends hanging on the back.
- Cut the warp threads on the back, tie them in pairs, and secure the ends.
- Tie a tassel to one end.
Safety for grown-ups
Use a blunt needle and always put it back in a jar. Cut away from your body. Never wrap yarn around fingers or your neck.
