Woven Paper Heart Basket
Age: 10–12 years · Time: 45–60 min · Level: Medium
The woven heart is an old Nordic Christmas decoration. It turns into a little basket you can fill with treats or nuts.
Materials
- 1 red and 1 white sheet of paper (letter size, glossy paper works well)
- a template: a rectangle 2 1/2 x 7 inches with one rounded end
- pencil and ruler
- scissors
- glue stick
- a paper strip, 1/2 x 6 inches, for the handle
Steps
- Fold each sheet in half. Draw the template so the straight end lies along the fold.
- Cut out both pieces. Then cut two straight slits from the fold, 3 inches long. Now each piece has three strips.
- Hold the red piece to the left and the white piece to the right, so they meet at a right angle.
- Weave the first white strip: slide it into the first red strip, then around the second and into the third.
- Weave the next white strip the opposite way: around, into, around. Weave the last strip like the first.
- Open the heart carefully. Glue the handle to the inside.
Safety for grown-ups
Be careful with the scissors and cut away from your body. Ask an adult for help if the slits get tricky.
